They changed their minds, but many a guidebook still stands by the assertion. Age aside, to those with backcountry on the brain these to foot-high peaks are a godsend, a little piece of prime high country smack dab hardly a Churchillian phrase, but a quintessential Carolina one in the middle of the state and easy to reach.
In the s the federal government snatched up some 45, acres of the Uwharries pronounced you-wahr-e to create the Uwharrie National Forest. The acreage now boasts the mile Uwharrie Trail and the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness in the North Carolina Piedmont region. Nearly plant species are found here, and the trails wind through stands of soaring longleaf pine, dense mountain laurel and mature forests of hickory and oak.
When visiting you may want to avoid the Badin Lake area because of all the campgrounds and multiple-use trails. A few miles north is the 5,acre Birkhead Mountains Wilderness, where the trails pitch and roll along streams and long ridgelines. Prospecting is allowed within a designed Wilderness Area, but an approved Plan of Operations is required.
Subsequently, designated wilderness areas were closed to minerals entry when the new law was enacted. Generally speaking, primitive camping refers to remote sites that lack basic creature comforts like electricity, cellphone reception, flushable toilets and running water. Recreational gold panning is allowed on most of the Uwharrie National Forest. No fee or permit is required as long as only shovel and pan techniques are used and no significant stream disturbance results.
The camp has 3 sites with fire rings, tables, tent pads, showers and toilets. Canebrake Horse Camp offering 40 miles of nearby horse trails has all electric sites and is near the shores of Badin Lake for fishing. Any motor vehicle operated off-highway is an OHV. Prev Post.
